The 2025 event date is not confirmed -- 5 Mila Marche is a three-day event and the first major cycle tourism event in the stunning Marche region of East-Central Italy. As its name suggests, the signature 5 Mila route comes with over 5,000 meters of elevation gain, or nearly 17,000 feet, over 155 miles. This challenging long-distance race attracts both amateur and professional cyclists from around the world. Fear not; if the 5 Mila route seems too ambitious, there are three event lengths to choose from. The Medio Course covers 51 miles and 4000 feet of elevation gain. The Long Route covers 70 miles and 5600 feet of elevation gain. The event is rated by Strambecco as one of the Best Gran Fondo Cycling events in Italy.
5 Mila Marche takes place in Porto Recanati, a charming coastal town in Italy's Marche region. Known for its natural beauty, rich history, and favorable climate, it offers an ideal setting for a cycling vacation. Situated along the Adriatic Sea, Porto Recanati boasts stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
The Marche region itself is a hidden gem, often overlooked by tourists in favor of its more famous neighbors, Tuscany and Umbria. However, this makes it an ideal destination for cycling enthusiasts seeking a quieter and more authentic experience. The region is characterized by rolling hills, picturesque vineyards, olive groves, and medieval hilltop towns, all of which can be explored on two wheels.
In Porto Recanati, cycling enthusiasts will find a variety of cycling routes catering to different skill levels. The town is well-connected with a network of cycling paths that stretch along the coast, providing scenic routes for leisurely rides. The Lungomare Europa, a seaside promenade, offers a beautiful cycling path that extends for several kilometers, allowing riders to enjoy panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea.
For more adventurous cyclists, the surrounding countryside provides numerous challenging routes. The hilly terrain of the Marche region offers opportunities for both road cycling and mountain biking. Cyclists can pedal through quaint villages, vineyards, and olive groves, immersing themselves in the region's stunning landscapes while enjoying the fresh air.
During your cycling vacation, you can also take advantage of the region's excellent cuisine and local wines. Marche is renowned for its gastronomy, and you'll find a variety of traditional dishes and seafood specialties in Porto Recanati's restaurants. Don't miss the opportunity to sample regional delicacies such as brodetto (fish stew) or vincisgrassi (a local version of lasagna).
When you're not cycling, take time to explore the region's cultural and historical attractions. The Marche region is home to numerous charming towns and cities, including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Urbino and Ascoli Piceno. These cities offer a glimpse into Italy's rich cultural heritage, with well-preserved historical centers, art galleries, and architectural marvels.
