The Golden Gran Fondo is a signature Gran Fondo National Series event with a start/finish in historic Golden Colorado, a short distance from both Denver and Boulder, and a gateway to the spectacular Rocky Mountain region. This event features more elevation gain per mile than any other GFNS event, all at elevation spanning 5,600-11,000 feet . Typical for the Rocky Mountains, individual climbs are 30+ minutes long, with substantial descents. This is one of 4 events in 2021 to have the elevated Super Gran route.
GFNS has been producing premier one day events since 2012 and currently hosts 8 national events including the official USA Cycling Gran Fondo Championship. What’s unique about GFNS events is that they offer a mix of personal challenge and serious competition on roads with challenging climbs and incredible scenery. Each rider is assigned an electronic timing-chip to keep track of their progress throughout the course and to allow riders to compete for best time through highlighted sections of the course. There is not start to finish as in traditional racing formats, but rather timed sections count towards a rider’s competition time.
The Golden Gran Fondo traces some of the same roads used in the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the Coors Classic, one of the largest professional stage races during the 1980’s when cycling really started to gain popularity in the US. Golden and some of the course route were also featured in the movie American Flyers (Kevin Costner’s classic cycling film that was set in Golden). The route feature 3 ride options: Gran Route – 91 miles and +10,860 ft climbing; Media Route — 63 miles and +6,750 ft climbing; 18 miles and +2,000 ft climbing. This course is sure to test your climbing prowess while treating you to some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscapes anywhere!
As the route features attest, this is an extremely challenging event both in terms of elevation gain, but also in terms of riding at elevation. GFNS strongly recommends bringing the easiest gearing you have and event if super strong want a minimum of a 27 on the rear with a compact crank. It is also recommended using high volume road tires as there are two gravel road sections on the long course (just 1 on the medio route).
