Golden Gran Fondo

August 27, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

$65 – $175

The Golden Gran Fondo is a signature Gran Fondo National Series event with a start/finish in historic Golden Colorado, a short distance from Denver and Boulder, and a gateway to the spectacular Rocky Mountain region. Picked as one of our best road cycling events in Colorado, this event features more elevation gain per mile than any other GFNS event, all at elevations spanning 5,600-11,000 feet. Typical for the Rocky Mountains, individual climbs are 30+ minutes long, with substantial descents.

The Golden Gran Fondo traces some of the same roads used in the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the Coors Classic, one of the largest professional stage races during the 1980s when cycling started to gain popularity in the US.   Golden and some course routes were also featured in the movie American Flyers (Kevin Costner’s classic cycling film set in Golden).  The route features three ride options: Gran Route – 91 miles and +10,860 ft climbing; Media Route — 63 miles and +6,750 ft climbing; 18 miles and +2,000 ft climbing.   This course will test your climbing prowess while treating you to some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscapes!

As the route features attest, this is an extremely challenging event in terms of elevation gain and riding at elevation.  GFNS strongly recommends bringing the easiest gearing you have, and even if super strong, you’ll want a minimum of a 27 on the rear with a compact crank.  It is also recommended to use high-volume road tires as there are two gravel road sections on the long course (just one on the Medio route).

Typical for a GFNS event, the ride is very well supported in feed stations and SAG support.  The route is well marked and marshaled, supported by law enforcement, safety motos, and mechanic/sag vehicles.   After a long day in the saddle, you can also look forward to the post-ride party and shady beer garden in Pack Square Park.

The GFNS event series was established in 2012 and comprised 12 European-style rides/races staged in the United States. Every GFNS event offers courses covering 30, 60, and 100-mile journeys through some of the most beautiful and challenging terrains in endurance sports. Timed sections allow riders to compete in specific course segments, while casual cyclists can ride at their own pace. Participants can ride as individuals or on teams. GFNS awards special prizes to the top riders in every age and gender category. Each rider is assigned an electronic timing chip to keep track of their progress throughout the course and to allow riders to compete for the best time through highlighted sections.

For the most dedicated athletes who participate in at least three events, GFNS offers the chance to win a National series championship based on your performance in the cumulative events.  The competition spans all rider categories.
