The Gran Fondo Milano-San Remo, born in 1970, is Italy’s most famous amateur cycling event. This event is extremely popular and attracts participants worldwide. Named after the famous Milan-San Remo professional cycling race, one of the sport’s five “Monuments,” the Gran Fondo version of the race is open to amateur cyclists. It allows them to experience the same challenging route as the pros.
The Gran Fondo Milano-San Remo is rated one of the Best Gran Fondos in Italy for 2023 by Strambecco. The route covers a distance of approximately 296 kilometers (184 miles) and starts in Milan, the capital of the Lombardy region in northern Italy. The route then travels south through the beautiful Italian countryside, passing through the regions of Piedmont and Liguria before finishing in Sanremo, a coastal city in the Liguria region.
One of the unique aspects of the event is the opportunity for amateur cyclists to ride on the same roads as professional cyclists. The route includes many challenging climbs and descents, including the famous Passo del Turchino and the Cipressa and Poggio climb, key features of the Milan-Sanremo race.
