Moat Mountain 24 Hours of Great Glen (24HOGG) is one of the most iconic and beloved bike events in New England, offering a notable 24-hour challenge with a festival-like atmosphere of camping, family-friendly activities, parties, live music, and food and drink. The race take place in New Hampshire and is produced by Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center which is a premier recreational facility offering a range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more, nestled at the base of Mt. Washington in Pinkham Notch.

Organizers make the race not only challenging, but exceptionally unique. For example, a previous year’s theme for the event was “Back to the Land of Oz,” (i.e. The Wizard of Oz). On course, racers met flying monkeys, rode through a field of poppies, under a rainbow, and they followed the “yellow brick road,” an optional fully painted floating bridge over the Glen pond. It’s no surprise that it has become a renowned favorite in the mountain biking community, as one participant said, “once you do this event, you’ll want to keep coming back.” She said, “It’s the positive vibe, the extraordinary location, and the people.” The team at Strambecco considers Moat Mountain 24 Hours of Great Glen to be one of the Best Mountain Bike Events in New England.

24 Hours of Great Glen Event & Course Info

For twenty years, between 1995 and 2015, cycling enthusiasts from all corners of the nation made their way to the foot of Mt. Washington in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, enticed by the allure of the 24 Hours of Great Glen (24HOGG) mountain bike race. Pioneering in New England, this event was inspired by the renowned 24 Hours of Canaan in West Virginia. The heart of the action took place at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, where the meticulously crafted course provided the perfect setting for this exhilarating race. From its humble beginnings with just 11 teams, the 24HOGG steadily gained momentum, reaching a milestone in 2015 with an astonishing turnout of over 180 teams and 500 dedicated participants.

Following a hiatus of five years, further prolonged by an unfortunate COVID-induced delay, the local Moat Mountain Smokehouse and Brewery stepped up as the title sponsor, rekindling the race’s legacy and reviving the cherished tradition in the Glen in the year 2021. Since then, the event has been an instant sell-out.

The course map can be found below, but race kicks off with an exhilarating “Le Mans” start, where participants circle the pond on foot before hopping onto their bikes. The trail meanders through a captivating blend of diverse terrains found in the North Country woodlands, combining the rustic charm of carriage roads at Great Glen Trails with thrilling single track. Each lap spans a distance of approximately 9 miles, providing riders with ample opportunities to test their skills and endurance. As you approach the conclusion of each lap, an exciting feature awaits you – an optional floating bridge that adds an extra element of challenge and excitement to the ride.
