The 2020 Death Ride has been cancelled due to the Covid Crisis.  Look for it’s return in 2021.  This is an iconic event recognized as one of the premier cycling events in the West. The route spans 129 Miles, covers 5 passes, and totals 15,000 feet of climbing….at altitude!   Although extremely challenging you’ll be constantly distracted by the beauty of Alpine county (just South of Lake Tahoe) and the majority of the ride is without car traffic.

An amazing experience that I’ve now done several times and want to do again, even though I now live on the East coast. As challenging as a one day event can be, but the beauty of the surroundings is sublime, and often takes your mind off the suffering which is inevitable. It is also amazing to ride (most of the route) without traffic, although that brings me to the only negative of the event. The final stretch of 50 miles (roughly) takes you up and back down the final climb. The up part is often into the wind and it’s a long grind (not that steep though). The real drag though is the traffic. It’s a pretty busy road.

There are many people who skip the final 50 miles to avoid the out/back 5th climb. You still get 80 miles with 12,000 feet of climbing under your belt…..and it’s the nicest part of the full ride in terms of scenery and NO cars.

Finally, perhaps it goes without saying, but no matter how fit you think you are, you need to train hard for this one. Mileage + Elevation gain + riding at elevation qualify this as one of the hardest one day endurance events you can do on a bike.

Be Prepared For A Long Ride:

• Include lots of climbing in your training
• Spend a minimum of 8 hours on your bike
• Stay hydrated before and during the ride, bring extra water
• Eat regularly before and during the ride, bring extra energy snacks

Bike Gearing for Climbing:

We recommend a 39 on front and a 28 on back, a triple or a compact. Use your brakes sparingly and evenly on descents, rims can heat up from brake pad friction. Watch for overheating brakes.

Tune Up Your Bike:

Be sure you have good brakes and good tires. You must be able to control your bike and your speed on extremely steep downhills and very sharp corners with possible wet and/or rough pavement.
