The famous Downieville Classic is returning in July for its 25th iteration. The bike festival brings hundreds to the small town of Downieville in Sierra County, California which holds only 260 natives. This bike festival epic, comprises a weekend of partying and bike racing; and maybe a dip or two into the Yuba river. There are two races that take place over the weekend; a downhill and a cross country discipline. The cross county race is famous for being a grind. It is a 26.5 point to point route starting in SIerra City (4,100′) and climbs to 7,100′ followed by a massive, gnarly descent of 5,200 vertical feet into downtown Downieville. Following the XC classic brings the longest and “most demanding” downhill race in the country which is 15 miles and 5000 feet of vertical drop. You can either race individually in one or both disciplines, but there’s also a unique category to race for the all Mountain Championship, where you have to complete the downhill and XC on the exact same bike. But the Downieville classic is much more than a race day. The festival is an ultra fun filled weekend filled with great food, drinks, live performances, and fun on the river. For over 25 years, people have been flocking to this tiny California mountain town to have a great summer weekend on the bike and it definitely should be a bucket list event for the fellow dirt lover. And hey, you don’t want to miss the chance to jump your bike into a river.
