Created in 2013 by local cyclists seeking something more demanding than typical valley rides\, this Gran Fondo National Series event has earned recognition as one of North America’s toughest. \nThe flagship Gran Fondo route covers 109 miles with 10\,350 feet of climbing across those four legendary gaps. The notorious Lincoln Gap features a 24% maximum grade and 15% average\, earning recognition as potentially the steepest paved mile in the U.S. The Medio Fondo (80 miles\, 6\,000 feet) skips Lincoln and Appalachian gaps\, while the Piccolo Fondo offers a 40-mile\, 2\,700-foot option. The ultimate Gran-X Fondo extends to 145 miles and 13\,700 feet by adding Roxbury and Rochester gaps. \nAll routes feature full support with rest stops\, sag vehicles\, and mechanical assistance. A Friday time trial covers 6.2 rolling miles\, and the Green Mountain Gap Challenge awards the fastest climbers up Lincoln Gap with local prize packages. \nThe event doubles as both a challenging ride and competitive race within the Gran Fondo National Series.
