DESCRIPTION:The Valley Spokesmen Bicycling Club celebrates 42 years of the Mt. Diablo Challenge\, an 11.2-mile climb up one of the Bay Area’s highest peaks. The event transforms South Gate Road through Mount Diablo State Park into a car-free corridor exclusively for over 800 cyclists tackling the 3\,249-foot ascent to the summit. \nStarting from the Athenian School\, riders follow South Gate Road to Summit Road before reaching the peak. The course welcomes remarkable diversity in equipment—road bikes\, tandems\, mountain bikes\, fixed-gear\, unicycles\, and even outdoor elliptical bikes. Class 1 and 3 e-bikes are permitted but aren’t eligible for awards. \nWave starts begin at 8:15 am based on estimated finish times\, with early waves enjoying the full road width during the climb. Aid comes from hydration stations en route and bike mechanics positioned at the start and summit. The peak offers coffee\, water\, energy bars\, and snacks\, though no SAG vehicles patrol the course. A strict descending protocol ensures safety after the summit celebration. \nOn clear days\, the summit vista stretches from the Farallon Islands to the Sierra Nevada\, rewarding the challenging effort with one of Northern California’s most spectacular panoramic views. \nThe celebration continues at Monte Vista High School with BBQ\, music\, and awards across 17 age categories. King and Queen of the Mountain titles headline the competition\, with special recognition for oldest and youngest participants.
