The weekend centers around two distinct races: a brutal 26.5-mile cross-country course and what’s widely considered the most demanding downhill race in the nation. \nThe cross-country race follows historic Gold Rush-era routes from Sierra City to downtown Downieville\, climbing 3\,000 feet to the Sierra Nevada crest before plummeting 5\,200 vertical feet through technical singletrack carved by 19th-century prospectors. Riders tackle rugged terrain through river canyons and old-growth forest\, with the course serving as both physical test and historical journey. \nThe downhill component drops 5\,000 vertical feet over 15 miles from Packer Saddle\, earning its reputation as the “Ironman of mountain bike downhill events.” The extended technical descent demands sustained concentration and bike-handling skills unlike typical downhill races. \nWhat sets Downieville apart is the All-Mountain Championship category\, requiring competitors to complete both disciplines on the same bike.
