SUMMARY:Mt. Baker Hill Climb 2026
DESCRIPTION:Since 1977\, when local cyclist Jerry Baker proposed a road race up Mt. Baker’s steep and winding roads\, this hill climb has evolved from a 38-rider local event into one of the premier cycling challenges in the Northwest. The climb now attracts hundreds of cyclists globally\, selling out its 400-participant cap annually. \nThe 22-mile route begins in Glacier and ascends 4\,462 feet to Artist Point\, averaging a 6.5% gradient with pitches hitting 14% grade. The Mt. Baker Highway is rarely closed to vehicles during the event\, adding a traffic management element to the challenge. The climb intensifies as riders approach the ski area\, with the final miles proving particularly brutal. Dense forests give way to panoramic mountain views as the route winds through the Cascade Range\, culminating at one of the country’s most scenic viewpoints. \nThree divisions accommodate different skill levels: Social\, Recreational\, and Competitive. Competitive cyclists start last at 8:30 am\, creating a reverse-wave format that keeps faster riders from overwhelming the field. The event welcomes anyone over 13\, fostering a community atmosphere despite its challenging nature. \nMechanical support stations are positioned at the start\, along the route\, and at Artist Point. Aid stations at White Salmon\, Chair 1\, and Artist Point provide nutrition and hydration. Descent options include riding down\, carpooling\, or using the Baker Bus shuttle service. \nThe competitive division awards custom medals and winner’s jerseys\, with special recognition for top finishers in each category. Organized by Whatcom Events\, the same group behind the famous Ski to Sea race\, proceeds benefit local non-profit Shifting Gears. \n[vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sxyzxlrc2WA”]\n[vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/hKigiys4QDM?si=pYWliRMs447IAa8a”]\n[vc_gallery gallery_type=”thb-portfolio” lightbox=”mfp-gallery” images=”4061\,4058\,4057\,4059\,4060\,4056″ img_size=”large”]
