DESCRIPTION:Set against the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains\, BWR North Carolina has earned its nickname “The Hell of the East” for good reason. This is arguably the hilliest event in the entire Belgian Waffle Ride series\, with the 2023 edition covering 134 miles and over 13\,000 feet of climbing through hot\, humid conditions that compound every challenge. \nThe course remains secret until the eve of the event\, but expect a relentless mix of punchy climbs and technical off-road sectors ranging from hard-packed surfaces to loose\, rocky gravel. Unlike mountain-focused events\, BWR NC uses a never-ending collection of short\, steep climbs designed to break riders mentally and physically. The varied “unroad” terrain demands versatility in both equipment choice and riding skills. \nThree distance options cater to different ambitions: the full 130-mile Waffle route for masochists\, a 75-mile Wafer option\, and a 35-40 mile Wanna route. All feature the signature BWR mix of pavement and gravel sectors that emulate European classics. \nRace day starts at 5 AM with waffles and coffee\, followed by a 7 AM start. First finishers typically roll in around 1 PM\, but the course stays open until 7 PM. Well-stocked aid stations appear every 20 miles\, crucial given the summer heat and frequent thunderstorms. \nThe event takes place at Kanuga Resort near Hendersonville\, about 22 miles south of Asheville.
