Cycling’s Newest Gem on the Emerald Isle

Set against the rugged backdrop of Ireland’s west coast, Gran Fondo Ireland 2024 is the latest addition to the UCI Gran Fondo World Series. This prestigious event, to be held for the first time in Sligo on June 29-30, 2024, promises an exhilarating blend of competitive spirit and scenic grandeur, establishing Ireland as a new hub for cycling enthusiasts from around the globe.

A Rich Tapestry of Routes

Gran Fondo Ireland 2024 offers a variety of courses tailored to different levels of cycling proficiency, each route winding through the picturesque landscapes of County Sligo. Participants can choose from the Classic Gran Fondo, which spans approximately 155 km and features significant climbs along the Wild Atlantic Way; the Medium Fondo, tailored for seasoned riders over 60 and all female categories; or the shorter Sportive route designed for those seeking a less demanding yet equally rewarding experience.  Whereas all the Gran Fondo events run on June 30, the event also hosts an individual time trial on June 29th.  The time trial course is just 26k, but it should not be underestimated, with 225M of climbing.

More Than Just a Race

Gran Fondo Ireland is a test of endurance and speed and a celebration of cycling culture. With Sligo’s full road closure for the event, the town is transformed into a cyclist’s haven, ensuring a safe and immersive racing experience. The event is meticulously designed to evoke the feel of a major pro race, akin to the Tour de France, providing a high level of support and atmosphere that elevates the experience to professional standards (Sligo County Council).

Economic and Cultural Boost

The arrival of the Gran Fondo on Irish shores is anticipated to boost local tourism and economy significantly. With its vibrant community and stunning natural scenery—ranging from majestic mountains to dramatic coastlines—Sligo is the perfect locale for such a high-profile event. The race is expected to draw thousands of international visitors, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and businesses throughout the region (UCI Gran Fondo World Series) (Sligo County Council).

A UCI World Championship Qualification Event

For competitive cyclists, the stakes are high, as Gran Fondo Ireland serves as a qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. The top 25% of finishers in each category will earn a spot at the Championships, adding an extra layer of international prestige to the event.  The UCI Gran Fondo World Series is an international cycling event organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). It features a series of cycling races held worldwide, allowing amateur cyclists to compete in a professionally managed environment. The series consists of various events that allow participants to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. The top 25% of finishers in each age group at these events qualify for the World Championships, where they compete for the prestigious UCI rainbow jersey. The series aims to promote cycling as a sport, encouraging participation among competitive and recreational cyclists across various age categories.

Joining the Festivities

Cyclists eager to partake in June 2024 can look forward to not just a race but an event filled with Irish hospitality, picturesque cycling routes, and the thrill of competition. With entry slots limited, early registration is recommended, especially to take advantage of early bird discounts offered to Cycling Ireland members (Irish Cycling) (Sportive.com).

Gran Fondo Ireland is more than just a cycling race; it’s a beacon for the cycling community and a testament to Ireland’s growing stature in the international cycling scene.
