Event Course & Info
The Grand Mesa Ultras includes three primary race distances: 50 miles, 55K, and 30K, each providing a unique challenge set in the high-altitude terrain of Grand Mesa. Each race starts at the Mesa Top Parking Lot, with staggered start times depending on the distance. Field limits and completion cutoff times vary, but all courses are designed to push runners to their limits while offering spectacular views of Colorado’s alpine wilderness.
50 Mile Race
The 50-mile race is the ultimate test of endurance and takes participants on a long, grueling journey across some of Grand Mesa’s most challenging terrain. Runners face 3,971 feet of ascent and descent, navigating through a mix of technical climbs, smooth trails, and lava rock sections. The course starts at 5:00 AM, and participants must complete the race by 8:00 PM, giving them a 15-hour window (18.6 minutes per mile pace) to conquer the elevation. Notable sections include the Crag Crest Trail, where runners will navigate a challenging loop filled with technical descents, and the Flowing Park Loop, which offers sweeping views of the San Juan and Elk Mountains. Aid stations along the way provide necessary fuel and hydration to help runners power through this epic adventure. No pacers are allowed, and participants must be self-sufficient while navigating the course. The top three male and female finishers receive cash prizes of $200, $150, and $125, respectively, with an additional $100 bonus for anyone who sets a course record.
55K Race
The 55K race offers a slightly shorter but equally demanding course, with 3,376 feet of ascent and descent at an average elevation of over 10,600 feet. Runners start at 7:00 AM, with a 12-hour cutoff to complete the race. The first section mirrors the 50-mile course, leading runners along the Crag Crest Trail for technical challenges before heading to the Flowing Park Loop. This race combines smooth trails with rocky sections, creating a dynamic course that demands both speed and endurance. Aid stations are well-stocked along the route to support runners. As with the 50-mile event, no pacers are allowed, and participants are expected to handle the challenges solo. Top male and female finishers receive cash prizes of $150, $125, and $100, with a course record bonus of $100.
30K Race
For those seeking a more moderate challenge, the 30K race provides an excellent opportunity to experience the beauty of Grand Mesa without the extreme distance of the other two races. Starting at 7:00 AM with a 7-hour cutoff, runners will navigate 2,503 feet of ascent and descent. The course takes participants through some of the same scenic trails as the longer races, including the Crag Crest Trail, offering spectacular views and technical terrain. This race is perfect for intermediate runners who want a taste of high-altitude trail running. Top finishers in the 30K also receive cash prizes of $125, $100, and $75, with a custom finisher award for the top three in each category.
All race distances feature a mix of single-track trails, rocky sections, and open meadows, with aid stations positioned strategically to provide necessary fluids and nutrition. The post-race celebration includes a burger cookout and refreshments courtesy of Palisade Brewing Company, allowing runners to relax and enjoy the camaraderie after a tough day on the trails. Awards are given out shortly after each race, with categories for 1st-3rd male/female and masters (50+).
