The Mt. Washington Auto Road is a historic and iconic mountain road in New Hampshire, ascending to the summit of Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. Opened in 1861, it was originally called the Mount Washington Carriage Road. It was the first man-made attraction in America, offering tourists a thrilling and scenic journey to the top of the 6,288-foot summit. The Auto Hill Climb, also known as the Climb to the Clouds, is a historic automobile race that dates back to 1904, making it one of the oldest motorsport events in the United States. The race challenges drivers to ascend the steep and narrow Auto Road in specialized race cars, navigating extreme gradients (up to 12%) and treacherous weather conditions. The event attracts professional drivers and motorsport enthusiasts worldwide and is considered one of the most challenging hill climbs in motorsports.

2. Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb

The Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb is a renowned cycling event held annually, where cyclists race to the summit of Mt. Washington. Known as one of the most difficult hill climbs in the cycling world, the race covers the full 7.6-mile ascent with an average grade of 12%, culminating in a final pitch of 22% at the summit. The race attracts elite cyclists, endurance athletes, and adventurous amateurs, offering a true test of strength, stamina, and mental fortitude. Due to the demanding nature of the climb, it is often regarded as one of the toughest cycling challenges in North America.  Strambecco rates the event as one of Best Cycling Hill Climb challenges in the US.
