Cruce Del Istmo 2026
About This Event
This challenging mountain biking event traverses Panama from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean in a single day, offering one of the most geographically ambitious courses in endurance cycling. The race navigates alongside the Panama Canal, through tropical rainforests, and across diverse terrains that showcase the country’s unique position as a continental bridge.
The Gran Fondo covers approximately 120 kilometers with 1,800 meters of elevation gain, split between 70% off-road and 30% asphalt sections. The Medio Fondo offers a 60-kilometer alternative with 840 meters of climbing. Both routes feature the race’s signature element: crossing expansive Gatun Lake using traditional cayucos (wooden canoes), creating a distinctive multi-sport challenge that combines cycling with cultural immersion.
As part of the National Ultra Endurance Epic 100 Mile MTB Race Series, the event attracts elite riders globally and maintains rigorous standards. The course’s technical variety ranges from dense rainforest singletrack to rural village passages, demanding both endurance fitness and bike handling skills across changing conditions.
The race atmosphere balances serious competition with cultural celebration. Participants experience Panama’s biodiversity firsthand while tackling one of the region’s most demanding physical challenges. The cayuco crossing provides a unique respite that breaks up the riding while connecting athletes to local maritime traditions.
Weather conditions can be intense, with tropical heat and humidity adding another layer of difficulty. The diverse terrain keeps riders engaged throughout, from technical forest sections to faster stretches near the canal, making this more than just an endurance test—it’s a journey across an entire country’s geography and culture.
