About This Event

Dating back to 1971, Nove Colli holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest gran fondo, drawing over 10,000 riders annually to Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Created to honor legendary cyclist Marco Pantani, who was born in nearby Cesenatico, this event has evolved into one of cycling’s most prestigious mass-participation races.

The experience begins at dawn in the ancient coastal town of Cesenatico, where thousands of riders roll out together in what many describe as an unforgettable spectacle. Three route options cater to different abilities: the full “Nove Colli” covers 200 kilometers with 3,880 meters of climbing, the medium route spans 130 kilometers with 1,870 meters of elevation, and the short option offers 60 kilometers with 650 meters of climbing.

The signature 200-kilometer route lives up to its name with nine major climbs threading through the rolling hills and countryside of Emilia-Romagna. The iconic Barbotto climb represents the event’s pinnacle challenge, reaching 1,024 meters elevation and testing even seasoned cyclists. The course combines technical climbing with stunning views of the Adriatic coast and Apennine Mountains.

Professional cyclists regularly praise the event’s atmosphere and organization. Vincenzo Nibali calls it “a reference point for all cyclosportives at an international level,” while Alberto Contador highlights the unique experience of starting at dawn with 12,000 fellow cyclists. The race’s popularity is evident in its frequent sellouts, with all bib numbers sometimes claimed within minutes of registration opening.

Post-race festivities include the traditional pasta party, and families can participate through the afternoon Nove Colli Mini event for children aged 7-14.
