This qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships serves up some of the most challenging terrain in the sport, with routes that mirror Grand Tour mountain stages through the legendary passes of the Vaud Alps.

The flagship Gran Fondo route is a monster: nearly 4,000 meters of climbing that begins with the Col de la Croix and Col du Pillon before tackling the lesser-known but brutally beautiful Col du Mittelberg. This climb connects Pays-d’Enhaut and Saanenland through landscapes where alpine wilderness dominates. The route then winds through the peaceful Hongrin Valley to its mountain lake and dam before finishing with a summit finale back at Col de la Croix from the opposite side.

For those wanting serious challenge without the full sufferfest, the Medio Fondo covers 96 kilometers with 2,500 meters of climbing. It hits the classic Vaud Alps passes including Col des Mosses, which has hosted recent Tour de France and Tour de Suisse stages, creating that authentic Grand Tour atmosphere. The Rando option at 56 kilometers and 1,900 meters of elevation offers a more accessible entry point while still delivering genuine alpine climbing.

The event draws international participants who come as much for the challenge as the stunning alpine scenery. Athletes finishing in the top 25% of their age group earn automatic qualification for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
