Pine Island Gravel Odyssey 2026
About This Event
Formerly the Gold Rush Gravel Grinder, this South Dakota gravel event operates under special use permit in the Black Hills National Forest. Ridge Rider Racing has created three distinct routes that showcase the region’s dramatic terrain, from open prairie to deep forest climbs and spectacular canyon vistas.
The flagship Ponderosa Escapade covers 100 miles with 5,600 feet of elevation gain through a challenging single loop. Riders tackle mostly gravel and dirt roads that wind through beautiful canyons with flowing creeks, climb to mountain vistas, and cross into Wyoming. The course demands riders comfortable averaging at least ten mph on technical gravel terrain. A 6:30 am start includes a five-mile neutral rollout from Spearfish City Park before hitting the gravel proper.
Three strategically placed aid stations provide water, food, and Heed sports drink at miles 32, 55, and 72, with specific cutoff times ranging from 9:45 am to 3:45 pm. The mile 55 checkpoint at Trailhead Lodge allows support crew access, making this stop particularly valuable for restocking and mechanical support.
The 65-mile Limber Excursion offers 4,300 feet of climbing with two aid stations, while the 45-mile Pine Cone Frolic focuses on completion over competition with 3,000 feet of gain. The shortest route uniquely allows e-bikes and emphasizes the satisfaction of finishing rather than racing.
All routes reward finishers who make cutoffs with completion awards. The courses blend technical gravel challenges with the Black Hills’ stunning natural beauty, creating an event that tests endurance while delivering memorable scenery through some of the Midwest’s most distinctive terrain.
