About This Event

The Angeles Crest 100 has challenged trail runners since 1986 through the rugged San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. What sets this ultramarathon apart is its unique conservation requirement: every participant must complete eight hours of trail maintenance before race day, ensuring the wilderness remains pristine for future generations.

The 100.5-mile course delivers nearly 19,000 feet of elevation gain across some of California’s most remote terrain. Starting in Wrightwood at 5:00 AM, runners immediately face a brutal climb up Mount Baden-Powell, the course’s highest point at 9,399 feet. From there, the route winds along exposed ridgelines, fire roads, and dense forest trails through protected wilderness areas, showcasing the dramatic diversity of the San Gabriel backcountry.

Entry requires ultramarathon experience, keeping the field limited to seasoned runners who can handle the 33-hour cutoff. Aid stations are strategically positioned throughout the course, with drop bag access at critical points. Pacers become mandatory after certain checkpoints, particularly valuable during the challenging night sections when navigation becomes more difficult.

The race maintains a no-frills atmosphere focused on the pure challenge of completing this demanding course. Support and Gear teams provide emergency assistance, though runners must be largely self-sufficient through the wilderness sections. The post-race celebration remains modest, emphasizing community connection over fanfare.

Organized by Team AC100 Trail Volunteers in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, this event combines extreme physical challenge with environmental stewardship, creating an experience that tests both endurance and character.
