Catalina Island Marathon 2026
About This Event
One of California’s oldest trail marathons, this event offers a unique point-to-point course from Two Harbors to Avalon across Catalina Island, 26 miles off the coast. The 26-mile route combines dirt roads, trails, and minimal pavement with 3,627 feet of elevation gain, taking runners through pristine wilderness where they might spot bald eagles, Catalina Island foxes, and American bison.
The course presents a true adventure run rather than a fast road race. Runners traverse varied terrain with stunning coastal and interior views, supported by 13 aid stations including 5 food stops. The event maintains an environmental focus as a cupless race with hands-free water refill stations. All aid stations stock water, electrolytes, and traditional trail nutrition including gels, bananas, and Coke.
Organized by Spectrum Sports Management and Run Catalina in partnership with the Catalina Island Conservancy, the event emphasizes sustainability and conservation. The 7am start leads to a 4pm cutoff, giving participants ample time to enjoy the scenery and challenge.
The marathon forms part of the Triple Crown Challenge for those completing three Run Catalina events within 12 months. The remote island setting requires advance planning, with most marathon runners staying in Avalon Friday night and catching the 5am boat to the Two Harbors start line.
This event attracts runners seeking something beyond typical road marathons – the combination of challenging terrain, wildlife encounters, and island adventure creates a memorable experience that has kept participants returning for decades.
