Behind the Rocks Ultra 2027
About This Event
This desert ultra delivers everything that makes Moab legendary: technical red rock terrain, remote wilderness sections, and stunning high-desert scenery. Organized by Mad Moose Events as part of both the Run Moab Series and Triple Crown of Moab, this race tests runners across challenging sandstone formations and isolated canyon country.
The 50-mile route stands as the ultimate challenge, with most elevation gain packed into the second half when legs are already tired. Expect long stretches between aid stations, sporadic cell coverage, and limited rescue access—finishing demands consistent pacing and strong preparation. The course features technical down climbs, rolling terrain through red rock corridors, and expansive views of Moab’s iconic landscape. Water carry requirements are mandatory due to the remote nature of the route.
The 50K maintains the technical challenge while offering a more manageable distance, still showcasing the area’s signature slickrock and desert trails. The 30K provides an excellent introduction to Moab’s terrain without the ultra distance commitment, while the 10-mile option suits newcomers to desert trail running.
Aid stations are strategically positioned but spaced farther apart than typical ultras, reflecting the remote setting. Cutoff times are enforced across all distances, and participant caps ensure a quality experience. No qualification standards are required, but proper desert running experience is essential.
The finish line atmosphere balances celebration with the intimate feel of a smaller field. Post-race, runners often gather around the start/finish area, which offers dispersed camping for those wanting to extend their Moab experience. The event’s reputation among veterans centers on its authentic desert challenge and the satisfaction of completing one of Utah’s more demanding ultras.
