Cycle to the Summit Pikes Peak 2026
About This Event
For road cycling enthusiasts seeking the ultimate test of endurance, this event presents a thrilling opportunity to pedal up one of America’s most iconic mountains. Produced by the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation and sanctioned by USA Cycling, it follows the same legendary course used for auto racing since 1916.
Cyclists negotiate over 156 turns across 12.5 miles, climbing more than 4,700 feet from the 9,380-foot starting elevation to Pikes Peak’s 14,115-foot summit. Those who complete the grueling ascent before the cutoff join the celebrated “Summit Society,” cementing their place among fellow summit conquerors.
The race begins at 6:13 am, greeting participants with mountain serenity as sunrise casts warm light across the landscape. Three strategically placed rest areas at Glen Cove, Devils Playground, and Summit provide water, Powerade, and light snacks. The route treats riders to ever-changing vistas from lush forests to rocky outcrops, but as cyclists near the summit, steep gradients and thinning air add intensity to the challenge.
The event features multiple medal categories for varying proficiency levels, plus a Gran Fondo community fun ride that doesn’t require USA Cycling membership. Competitive racers must hold memberships with USA Cycling and the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado.
High-altitude preparation is essential. Spending several days practicing at elevations above 6,000 feet is advised, along with proper hydration and hyperhydration to oxygenate muscles. Mountain weather ranges from sunny warmth to arctic chill, demanding preparation for all scenarios. Mandatory brake checks at Glen Cove during descent prevent overheated rims and tire failure.
