About This Event

Set against the rolling hills of Frederick County, the Grand Fondue delivers a challenging mixed-surface cycling experience that combines serious elevation with post-ride festivities at the Orchid Cellar Meadery & Winery. The event’s three route options make it accessible to different skill levels while maintaining the punchy climbs that define Maryland gravel riding.

The signature Grand Fondue route covers 100 miles with a substantial 10,000 feet of elevation gain across mixed terrain that includes gravel roads, occasional trails, and paved segments through Frederick County’s countryside. The Half Fondue cuts the distance to 50 miles but keeps the challenge with 5,500 feet of climbing, while the Mini Fondue offers a 25-mile introduction with 2,000 feet of elevation gain.

What sets this event apart is the combination of serious terrain and relaxed atmosphere. Riders tackle legitimate climbs through scenic farmland and forest, then finish at a working meadery where the post-ride celebration includes local beverages and food. The October timing typically delivers ideal fall weather and peak foliage.

Aid stations are strategically positioned on the longer routes, and Bike Doctor Frederick provides both pre-ride bike checks and on-route mechanical support. Start times are staggered between 8:00-11:00 am to manage traffic flow on the mixed-surface roads.

The event supports Heartly House, a local nonprofit serving domestic abuse survivors, giving the ride a community service element that resonates with many participants. Organized by Bike Doctor Frederick and Dirty Kitten Productions, it strikes the right balance between competitive challenge and charitable celebration.

Dirty Kitten Productions is the event organizer behind the popular Dirty Kitten Gravel Race (DKGR), a gravel cycling event that takes place annually in Rapidan, Virginia. Founded with a strong focus on inclusivity and community, Dirty Kitten Productions strives to create fun, safe, and welcoming environments for cyclists of all backgrounds and abilities. The organization is particularly dedicated to supporting women and non-binary cyclists, offering reserved registration spots for these groups to encourage broader participation in their events.

The Dirty Kitten Gravel Race, the flagship event of Dirty Kitten Productions, is held on the scenic grounds of Locust Hill Farm & Preserve. This event features a variety of race distances, including 20, 40, 60, and 80 miles, all on unpaved terrain that includes gravel roads, dirt tracks, and forest trails. The race is known for its challenging course, which varies from smooth gravel sections to rough and technical segments, offering something for every type of gravel cyclist.

In addition to the Dirty Kitten Gravel Race, Dirty Kitten Productions organizes several other events throughout the year, including the Dirty Kitten Gralley Cat, a gravel grinder with an alleycat-style format, and various training camps and clinics designed to enhance skills and build community among cyclists.
