Event for 2026 not confirmed yet... As a Nordic skiing enthusiast, few events capture my attention quite like the UP Health System Great Bear Chase 2026 in Calumet, Michigan. This storied race is renowned for its impeccable trail conditions, even when other nearby regions struggle to maintain snow cover. Started in 1981, this race was designed to showcase the extraordinary snow of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and serve as a fundraiser for the Swedetown Trails Club. These trails, among the finest in the Midwest, are meticulously maintained using proceeds from the race, and is a chance for skiers to qualify for the Birkebeiner Series. Strambecco rates the Great Bear Chase 2026 as one of the Best Nordic Ski Races in the Midwest.

Event & Course Info

While registering for the Great Bear Chase, Skiers can choose from 50k, 25k, and 10k distances, with both classic and freestyle options available. Additionally, there are two skiathlon events—a grueling 50k (25k classic and 25k freestyle) and a shorter 20k version (10k classic and 10k freestyle). The skiathlon format offers a unique challenge by requiring skiers to switch techniques mid-race. Beyond the distances, it’s the welcoming atmosphere, the impeccable snow conditions, and the sense of community that make this race a special late-winter tradition for skiers from across the region. Whether you’re here for the competition or just to soak in the small-town charm of Calumet, the Great Bear Chase delivers an unforgettable Nordic skiing experience.

The Great Bear Chase offers routes that weave through the Swedetown trail system, famous for its picturesque, rolling terrain. The 50k route is the longest, with a blend of challenging climbs and gentle descents over 31 miles of pristine snow, featuring an elevation gain of approximately 2,000 feet. The 25k option, at 15.5 miles, offers half the distance and is ideal for skiers looking for a moderate challenge, with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain. For beginners or those seeking a shorter race, the 10k provides a scenic 6.2-mile loop, incorporating about 500 feet of elevation gain.

Post-race celebrations for the Great Bear Chase are lively, with awards distributed for top finishers in each category, including special recognition for age groups. It's a wonderful chance to meet fellow skiers and immerse yourself in the local ski culture. The event not only brings the skiing community together but also injects significant economic support into the region, making it a true celebration of both sport and community. The Great Bear Chase is an event you won’t want to miss. It’s a chance to push your limits and enjoy the beauty of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, all while contributing to a great cause.
