Established in 2010 and now seeking 501(c)(3) status, the Team SISU Ski Fest has created an event that has grown to become a celebration of cross-country skiing and winter silent sports in the Gogebic Iron Range as well as part of the Birkebeiner Qualifier Series. This is a point-to-point race that begins at the renowned Active Backwoods Retreat (ABR) Trails and concludes in the heart of downtown Ironwood. Strambecco rates the SISU Ski Fest as one of the Best Nordic Ski Races in the Midwest, taking place annually in Ironwood, Michigan.
Event & Course Info
What sets the SISU Ski Fest apart is the distinctive course design, the main event is 30K in length with the first 21K traversing the meticulously groomed ABR trails and the final 9K exclusively skied on race day, with the exception of the 2K stretch through the Miners Memorial Heritage Park. For those seeking a shorter race, the Heikki Lunta 15K Ski Race offers a similar experience, with the first 6K on the ABR Trails followed by the same 9K route into town. Registrants can also select the Hauska Hiihto 5K Fun Ski which is designed for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. This route covers the last 5K of the main race course, making it an excellent choice for families, beginners, or anyone looking to enjoy a leisurely ski. There is a special event for young skiers with the Depot Dash, a free event for children aged 10 and under. This short course is an introduction to the sport, with skis and boots provided, volunteers ready to assist, and plenty of treats like hot chocolate and cookies at the finish.
The SISU Ski Fest experience doesn't end at the finish line. The SISU Party, featuring a hearty pasty lunch offers a chance to refuel and share stories with fellow racers. Additionally, the SISU Expo, held at the Ironwood Memorial Building in conjunction with the party, provides an opportunity to browse and purchase SISU-themed merchandise, including notecards, jewelry, and apparel. Participating in this event is more than just a race—it's an immersion into the vibrant Nordic skiing culture of the Upper Peninsula, where the trails are challenging, the community is welcoming, and the experience is unforgettable. Whether you're competing for a personal best or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the SISU Ski Fest is a must-attend event for any cross-country skiing enthusiast.
