The Ignite Trail Marathon, organized by the Ignite Trail Series, is a highly anticipated trail running event in the Midwest, held annually at the picturesque Chain O’Lakes State Park in Albion, Indiana. Known for its scenic yet challenging course, the race draws runners from across the country. Strambecco rates the Ignite Trail Marathon as one of the Best Trail Running Events in the Midwest and one of the Best Trail Running Events in Indiana. As part of the larger Ignite Trail Series, which includes the Indiana Trail 100 and the Glacial Esker race, this marathon allows runners to experience one of the most well-organized and supported races in the region. What sets this event apart is its commitment to giving back to the park, with proceeds benefiting the upkeep and maintenance of Chain O’Lakes’ beautiful trails.

Event Course & Info

The Ignite Trail Marathon takes place on a 13.1-mile loop through the diverse terrain of Chain O’Lakes State Park, which runners tackle two times. The course features a mix of rolling grass pastures, technical trails, steep climbs, and rewarding lake views. For those taking on the full marathon distance, participants will complete two loops of this challenging yet scenic course. With approximately 1,000 feet of elevation gain per loop, the course tests both endurance and trail running skills.

Runners can expect a well-marked route with pink flags on the right and arrow signs at specified turns. Along the way, there are three well-stocked aid stations to provide hydration and nutrition support. The aid stations are strategically placed at the Main Aid Station (mile 0/13.1), Hilltop Aid Station (mile 4.2), and Weber Lake Aid Station (mile 9.5). These stations will offer water, Tailwind electrolyte drinks, gels, and snacks, ensuring runners are fueled for the entire race.

The event has a generous 8-hour completion cutoff time, allowing runners ample time to enjoy the course and finish strong. The race begins promptly at 8:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time, with all runners required to be at the start line by 7:50 AM. The Ignite Trail Marathon is Trail Sisters approved, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment for both men and women, with equal podium spots and awards. All finishers will receive medals, and top age group finishers will receive special recognition in categories ranging from Under 29 to 70+.

For runners interested in shorter distances, the Ignite Trail Half Marathon covers one 13.1-mile loop of the same course, providing a challenging yet manageable race for mid-distance trail runners. However, the focus of the day remains on the full marathon distance, which truly showcases the park's beauty and the spirit of trail running.
