About This Event

The Ignite Trail Marathon takes place on a challenging 13.1-mile loop through Chain O’Lakes State Park that runners complete twice. The course weaves through diverse terrain including rolling grass pastures, technical singletrack, steep climbs, and scenic lake views, with approximately 1,000 feet of elevation gain per loop.

What makes this December race special is its commitment to giving back—proceeds directly benefit trail maintenance and park improvements at Chain O’Lakes. The event is part of the respected Ignite Trail Series, created by ultra-distance runners who launched Indiana’s first 100-mile trail race here in 2013. Their dedication to course quality and organization shows in every detail.

The route is well-marked with pink flags and directional signage, supported by three strategically placed aid stations at miles 0/13.1, 4.2, and 9.5. Each station stocks water, Tailwind electrolyte drinks, gels, and snacks. The generous 8-hour cutoff gives runners plenty of time to tackle the technical sections and enjoy the park’s natural beauty.

Starting at 8:00 AM Eastern, the race maintains an inclusive atmosphere with Trail Sisters approval, ensuring equal recognition for all participants. Age group awards span from Under 29 to 70+, and every finisher receives a medal. The park offers free tent camping near the start/finish, creating a community feel that extends beyond race day.

Runners consistently praise the course’s variety and the organizers’ attention to detail. The December timing means cooler temperatures and fewer crowds on the trails, though weather can add an extra challenge to an already demanding course.

The Ignite Trail Series is a collection of some of the most enthralling and challenging ultra-endurance events in the country. The series encapsulates three distinctive races unfolding in the panoramic vistas of Chain O’ Lakes State Park, Albion, Indiana. Every race in the Ignite Trail Series is uniquely designed to provide runners with breathtaking scenery and technically challenging trails, from steep climbs to the picturesque views of the lakes throughout the park. It is not just a race; it’s a holistic experience, a communion with nature enhanced by world-class race support and organization. It allows athletes, whether seasoned or novice, to delve into the essence of ultramarathon racing, inspiring them to push boundaries and explore untapped potential.

The Indiana Trail 100 is the crown jewel of the series, drawing competitive ultramarathon racers from across the nation each Fall. It’s a testament to stamina and spirit, a challenge wrapping around the sprawling landscapes and serene lakes of the state park. The foliage in October adds a kaleidoscope of colors, enriching the runner’s journey through the various terrains, rolling grass pastures, and steep climbs.

The Glacial Esker 6-12-24 Hour Race, taking place in the blooming Spring, is a journey through time, allowing racers to witness the transforming landscapes and endure technical trails. The varied time durations cater to a diverse range of athletes, challenging each according to their mettle.

The latest addition to the series, the Ignite Trail Half & Full Marathon, offers another platform for runners to experience the exhilaration and fulfillment unique to ultramarathons.
