Updated August 31, 2024 --

The 2025 event date is not confirmed -- The Laramie Range Epic is a high-quality mountain bike event on the beautiful single-track trails of Laramie, Wyoming. It is considered one of the Best Mountain Bike Events in the Rockies, as rated by Strambecco.  The race originated in 1998, starting in historic Downtown Laramie. At that time, the race began with a police escort through town before climbing 1,300 feet out of the Laramie Valley and into the stunning hills just East of Laramie on the trails that make this area so special. Twenty-five+ years later, the race has maintained a traditional approach to cross-country racing while adapting to the evolution of cross-country culture with a high-quality and fun mountain biking event.

Two distance options take place over a set, looped course; you can complete one lap (one and done) or two (Laramie Range Epic).  The lap is a 32-mile loop (3,190 ft of climbing/descending at over 7500 ft in elevation) winding through the Pole Mountain trail system, making the full Laramie Range Epic challenge a total of 64 miles and 6,380 ft. of climbing. Racers are supported by a dedicated group of volunteers and sponsors who help make the race as fun and approachable as it is challenging and competitive.

Over the Laramie Range Epic course, aid stations are every 10 miles with performance sports nutrition and fresh food. So this means there are three aid stations along the course, bringing that to six possible steps you can take to refuel during the Epic.  After the race, there will be some top-level food from food trucks, and you and your family can pre-buy food tickets for 10 dollars a person, which is good for one meal from any vendor. There will be food and a nice, good-hearted feeling after a party with music and an award ceremony.

The official lodging partner for the event is Holiday Inn Laramie, and primitive camping is available at the event site. Additional camping locations to explore are Tie City Campground, Yellowpine Campground, or Curt Gowdy, which is 9 miles east and near more mountain biking trails. That being said, there are some nice vacation rental options right downtown, like this converted artists' loft and cottage where you can take in all that Laramie has to offer.

While in town for the event, you should take advantage of all of the outdoor activities Laramie offers, such as stunning natural landscapes, including the nearby Medicine Bow National Forest and the Snowy Range Mountains surrounding it. Popular hiking and trail running trails include the Medicine Bow Peak Trail, which leads to breathtaking panoramic views, and the Vedauwoo Recreation Area, known for its unique rock formations and scenic trails. The area is also a rock climbing haven, with numerous climbing areas suitable for all skill levels. Vedauwoo is renowned for its high-quality granite cracks and offers a range of routes for climbers. Lastly, Laramie is situated near several pristine rivers and lakes, making it an excellent destination for anglers and fishing enthusiasts. The Laramie River and its tributaries provide opportunities for trout fishing, while the nearby alpine lakes in the Snowy Range Mountains offer serene settings for fly fishing.

For a vibrant and local-feel event on some world-class single track, the Strambecco editing staff highly recommends the Laramie Range Epic. Another favorite mountain biking event taking place in Wyoming is Pierre's Hole 50/100, which is part of the National Ultra Endurance (NUE) Race Series.
