Nordic skiers should always be on the lookout for events that offer a perfect mix of challenge, camaraderie, and breathtaking scenery like the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede. Held annually at the Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center in Grandby, CO, this event is steeped in tradition and known for its stunning courses, is a must-attend for any serious Nordic skiing enthusiast. What makes this race so unique is its status as part of the prestigious Birkebeiner Qualifier Series. This distinction alone sets it apart from many other races, offering skiers the opportunity to earn their way into one of the most famous Nordic events in the world. Strambecco rates the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede, as one of the Best Nordic Ski Races in the Rocky Mountains.

Event & Course Info

Skiers can choose between long and short course options across two race days, with both freestyle and classic techniques represented. This structure allows for back-to-back marathon experiences—a rare and exhilarating challenge in the Nordic skiing world. In addition to the competitive races, the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede also caters to families and less competitive skiers with a 25K Tour option, and a free 3K Kids Fun Race, making it an inclusive event that truly has something for everyone.

Three race distances are offered for both the Freestyle and Classic races: 12.5K, 25K, and 50K. Each distance in the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede presents its own set of challenges and highlights the rugged beauty of the Colorado Rockies. The 12.5K course, while shorter, is packed with elevation changes, making it a great option for those looking for a quick but intense workout. The 25K course doubles the distance, offering a more extended challenge with sustained climbs and exhilarating descents. The 50K course is the ultimate test of endurance and skill, requiring racers to tackle multiple laps of the 12.5K loop.

Support on the course is well-organized, with aid stations strategically placed along the routes. Completion cutoff times are enforced, particularly for the longer distances, but they are generous enough to accommodate a wide range of skill levels. The 50K races typically start early in the morning with the shorter distances following in staggered starts. Post-race celebrations are a highlight of the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede. The coveted Ranch Boss silver buckle and Ranch Hand silver belt buckle are symbols of achievement that any Nordic skier would be proud to earn.
