About This Event

Last updated June 7, 2026

Event for 2027 has not been confirmed yet… Mountain biking’s War Daddy 2027 delivers exactly what its name promises: a punishing 68-mile test through Kentucky’s rugged terrain with over 8,000 feet of climbing. This Trail Sick-organized event transforms the landscape around Hyden into a gauntlet that demands equal parts physical strength and mental fortitude.

The course begins deceptively with a 5-mile neutral rollout through town before unleashing the Owl’s Nest Climb—1.3 miles at 6.9% grade transitioning from pavement to gravel. What follows is a masterclass in terrain variety: 12 miles of mixed gravel and pavement along the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River, then the notorious War Baby Climb with its 8.4% average grade and pitches hitting 20-30%.

Technical descents through sandstone and mountain streams lead to the War Dwarf Climb before a white-knuckle descent on Hell for Certain Road, a narrow single-lane stretch that lives up to its ominous name. The climactic War Daddy Climb spans nearly a mile at 10.8% grade over loose, chunky rock that punishes equipment and legs alike.

The final gauntlet includes four miles of rutted ATV trail with deep mud holes, followed by six miles through abandoned strip mine terrain featuring brutal climbs and rapid-fire descents.

Four well-stocked aid stations at miles 20, 33, 43, and 54 provide crucial support with food, hydration, mechanical assistance, and drop bag services. Southern hospitality shines through the volunteer crews who keep spirits high when the course tries to break them. For those not ready for the full punishment, Sandlin’s Shred offers a shorter alternative while maintaining the event’s challenging character.
