About This Event

Known as the “Beast of the East,” this annual mountain biking competition takes place on Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks, the same peak that hosted downhill ski races during the 1980 Winter Olympics. The challenging terrain that once tested Olympic skiers now provides an equally demanding test for mountain bikers.

The signature 100K endurance race packs over 7,500 feet of climbing into its route, while the 50K option still delivers a substantial 3,000 feet of elevation gain. Riders navigate a diverse mix of terrain that showcases the best of Adirondack mountain biking: rugged backcountry roads near Jay and Saddleback mountains, flowing singletrack sections, technical stretches through Hardy Road Trails and the Flume Trail, and fast descents down ski slopes with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

The course design takes full advantage of the mountain’s varied landscape, combining smooth flowing sections with rocky, technical challenges and plenty of sustained climbing. Riders are rewarded with stunning vistas of the Adirondack Mountains throughout the route, particularly during the ski trail descents where the views open up dramatically.

The event atmosphere strikes a balance between serious competition and mountain biking camaraderie. Both amateur and professional riders from across the country converge on Wilmington, creating an energetic environment where spectators and fellow competitors cheer riders through the most challenging sections. The post-race scene maintains that authentic mountain town feel that makes Adirondack events special.
