Vasaloppet
About
Vasaloppet is one of Sweden’s most iconic sporting events, with a rich history dating back to 1922. Originally established as a cross-country ski race, Vasaloppet spans a 90-kilometer course from Sälen to Mora, a route famously connected to the escape of King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. Over time, Vasaloppet has evolved to include various events throughout the year, including cycling and running, making it a year-round celebration of endurance sports.
One of the standout events during Vasaloppet’s Summer Week is Cycle Vasaloppet (Cykelvasan). This thrilling mountain biking race covers the same historic 90-kilometer course used in the winter ski race. Starting in Sälen and finishing in Mora, participants ride through beautiful Scandinavian landscapes, including dense pine forests, open meadows, and traditional Swedish villages. The course, known for its challenging terrain, includes sections on forest roads, wooden decking over bogs, and gravel paths. It’s a test of both physical endurance and mental toughness, attracting over 13,000 cyclists annually, ranging from elite athletes to recreational riders.
Cycle Vasaloppet is not just a race but part of a broader festival experience during Vasaloppet’s Summer Week. The event week includes a variety of activities for all ages, including social rides, MTB freestyle shows, and children’s events, making it a family-friendly celebration of cycling culture. Whether you’re a serious competitor or just looking to enjoy the scenic Swedish countryside, Cycle Vasaloppet offers an unforgettable adventure.
