Gravel Races in the Rocky Mountains

5 upcoming events

The Rocky Mountains are North America's most demanding playground for gravel riders. Thin air, punchy climbs, and surfaces that swing from buffed forest road to chunky alpine doubletrack in a single mile — these are races that reward riders who train for elevation as much as endurance. We've catalogued every gravel race we know of across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Utah, from grassroots community rides to the calendar-anchoring Belgian Waffle Ride and SBT GRVL. Use the filters below to find one that matches your distance and the time of year you want to ride.

Frequently asked

  • When is the best time of year to race gravel in the Rocky Mountains?
The Rocky Mountain gravel season runs roughly mid-May through late September. June and September are the sweet spots — snow has cleared from the high passes and afternoon thunderstorms are less aggressive than peak July. Above 9,000 feet, anything before Memorial Day or after the first October storm is a gamble.
  • Which races are good for first-time gravel riders in the Rockies?
Look for events with a sub-50-mile option and under 4,000 ft of climbing. SBT GRVL's "Black" route, the shorter Belgian Waffle Ride distances, and most community-organized rides in Colorado's Front Range fit this profile. Avoid anything labeled "epic," "ultra," or with a route name referencing a 12,000-ft pass for your first one.
  • How much does altitude actually affect race performance?
Significantly — and more than most flatland riders expect. Above 7,000 ft, expect 10–15% reduction in sustainable power for the first 3–5 days. Plan to arrive at altitude either the day before (to race on travel-fresh legs) or 7+ days early (to start acclimatizing). The middle ground — arriving 3 days out — is the worst-case scenario physiologically.
  • Do I need a gravel-specific bike or will a hardtail mountain bike work?
Most Rocky Mountain gravel races are rideable on a gravel bike with 40–45mm tires. Routes that include sections of Continental Divide doubletrack or technical descents (Crusher in the Tushar, parts of Grand Junction Off-Road) are faster and more enjoyable on a fast hardtail. Check each event's route preview — race directors are usually explicit about minimum recommended tire width.
  • How do I get to most of these races without a car at the start town?
Honestly, you probably can't. Rocky Mountain gravel races are scattered across small mountain towns where bike-friendly transit is rare. Plan to fly into Denver, Salt Lake City, or Bozeman and rent a vehicle. A few races (notably those near Boulder and Salt Lake) are reachable by shuttle from the nearest airport, but check the event's travel page before booking flights.
