Last updated September 22, 2024

The 2025 event date is not confirmed -- The XTERRA Sugarloaf Trail Running Event is a premier off-road race set in the breathtaking terrain of Carrabassett Valley, Maine, within the Sugarloaf Mountain region. Part of the globally recognized XTERRA Trail Run Series and previous host to the Xterra Trail Running World Championship, this event is designed to challenge trail runners with rugged landscapes, technical trails, and steep elevations, all while offering stunning views of Maine’s wilderness.  courses reward runners and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide with a quintessential Maine experience filled with roots and rocks, big climbs, vibrant colors, hero dirt, and views for miles around every switchback.  Sugarloaf is one of the largest ski areas in the East during the snowy winters. Still, in the Fall, the bright white gives way to a cornucopia of colors connecting softwoods and hardwoods with mountain streams and natural bridges.  The topography at Sugarloaf Resort boasts more than 60 miles of twisting tree-lined trails from its base elevation of 1,417 feet to its mountain peak at 4,237 feet.

Event Overview:

The XTERRA Sugarloaf race is one of the most challenging trail running events in the Northeastern United States, appealing to elite runners and passionate amateurs looking for a test of endurance and trail-running skill. The event typically offers multiple race distances, ranging from a full marathon (42 km) to shorter routes such as a half-marathon (21 km) and a 10-12 km trail run, providing options for runners of all levels.  The course traverses through the rugged Sugarloaf Mountain and Carrabassett Valley, known for its dense forests, steep climbs, and rocky outcroppings. Runners face technical sections, including single-track trails, uneven surfaces, and exposed mountain ridges, as well as more flowing sections through picturesque woodlands. The event’s elevation profile features significant climbs and descents, typical of XTERRA races, making it a true test of trail-running prowess.

  • Marathon (42 km): Marathoners can expect a tough 40-kilometer/24.94-mile course featuring more than 1,000 meters / 4,393 ft. of climbing, and half that for the 21K runners. Starting with a stimulating climb, the marathon route is a test of endurance and determination. With an elevation gain of about 1,300 meters, runners will navigate through non-technical trails, balancing speed with the uphill challenge. This distance is a true test of stamina and strength, with significant elevation gains and rocky, technical trails. The route takes runners through dense forests, along mountain ridgelines, and over uneven terrain, making for a physically demanding race.
  • Half Marathon (21 km): While still challenging, this distance allows runners to experience the tough trails and rewarding vistas without the full marathon commitment.
  • 10-12 km: For newer trail runners or those seeking a less intense challenge, this shorter distance captures the beauty of the Sugarloaf area while offering a manageable, yet still tough, trail experience.
