About This Event

The Hellgate 100K 2026 is an iconic 66.6-mile trail race organized by Dr David Horton, a renowned ultra-runner and race director, held in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Starting at 12:01 a.m. on December 14, this race is known for its grueling conditions and unforgiving terrain, pushing participants to their limits as they navigate the course in the dead of night. Strambecco rates Hellgate 100K 2026 as one of the Best Trail Running Race Events in the Mid-Atlantic region and one of the Best Trail Running Race Events in Virginia. Selected as a Western States Qualifier event, it offers a unique opportunity for runners to earn a chance to enter the December lottery, with sub-17-hour finishers qualifying for the Western States 100 in two years.

The Hellgate 100K++ follows a rugged and demanding route through the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering participants a mixture of steep climbs, technical descents, and various weather conditions ranging from freezing temperatures to icy or snow-covered trails. The race begins at the northern terminus of the Glenwood Horse Trail, near Big Hellgate Creek, and runs to Camp Bethel, near Fincastle, VA.

With an overall distance of 66.6 miles, the course features around 13,000 feet of elevation gain, making it a true test of endurance and mental fortitude. Runners will navigate through key locations such as Petites Gap (8 miles), Overstreet Falls (21.3 miles), Jennings Creek (29 miles), and Little Cove Mountain (35.1 miles). The two most critical aid stations are at Floyd’s Field (22.5 miles) and Bearwallow Gap (42.5 miles), where runners can leave drop bags for supplies. Nine aid stations in total provide runners with refreshments, though crew access is limited to six of these stations.

The course is marked with 2″ by 6″ orange paint and plastic blazes, with additional reflective streamers placed at tricky night-time turns. Cut-off times are strictly enforced, with runners needing to reach Floyd’s Field by 6:40 a.m. and Bearwallow Gap by 12:30 p.m. to be allowed to continue.

The race’s field limit is set at 150 participants, and there are no refunds or transfers of entry fees. For those who complete the race in under 18 hours, there are awards such as Patagonia gear for the top finishers. Five-time finishers also receive special recognition.

Strambecco profiles events that are Western States 100 Qualifier events.   The Western States Endurance Run, known commonly as the Western States 100, is a 100.2-mile (161 km) ultramarathon in  California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains trails yearly on the last full weekend of June. The race starts at the base of the Olympic Valley ski resort and finishes in Auburn, California. The terrain is quite rugged, frequently showcasing snow on the highest passes and record-hot temperatures throughout the course.  Runners ascend a cumulative total of 18,090 feet (5500 m) and descend a total of 22,970 feet (7000 m) on mountain trails before reaching the finish. Because of the length, the race commences at 5 a.m. and continues through the day and into the night. Runners finishing before the 30-hour time limit for the race receive a commemorative bronze belt buckle, while runners finishing in under 24 hours receive a silver belt buckle.

The Western States 100 is one of the five 100-mile races comprising the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, including the Old Dominion 100Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run, and the Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run in Utah and the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado.

The Western States Board of Trustees has instituted rules around the overall lottery and selection process, which you can see here.
