Grindstone Running Festival 2026
About This Event
Set in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley during peak fall foliage, the Grindstone Running Festival stands out as one of the most technically challenging trail running events on the East Coast. This UTMB World Series event offers four distances—100M, 100K, 50K, and 21K—each designed to test runners against the rugged terrain of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
The 100-mile course epitomizes the event’s reputation for difficulty. Starting at the historic Natural Chimneys, runners face a deceptively gentle warm-up before hitting Narrow Back Mountain’s ridges and descending buttery single-track to Wolf Ridge. The real test begins with the brutal climb to Reddish Knob, continuing over Little Bald Knob onto the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail. This iconic section traverses Grindstone Mountain, Lookout Mountain, and Hankey Mountain before the punishing ascent to Elliott’s Knob, the course’s highest point. A 2,000-foot descent down Cold Springs Trail provides brief relief before runners tackle Crawford Knob again and face the steep Horse Trough climb back over Narrow Back Mountain.
The substantial elevation gain and technical single-track make this a legitimate qualifier for both Western States 100 and Hardrock 100. The 100K follows similar terrain but avoids Elliott’s Knob’s most brutal sections, while the 50K introduces runners to the course’s technical demands without the ultra commitment. Even the 21K features challenging climbs and technical terrain around Narrow Back Mountain’s foothills.
Comprehensive aid stations support runners throughout, and finishing the 100M earns a coveted belt buckle. Top finishers in each distance qualify automatically for corresponding UTMB Mont-Blanc events, while all finishers earn Running Stones for the UTMB Index system.
