About This Event

The Pennsylvania Trail Dogs deliver one of the region’s most demanding trail challenges, weaving through Hyner village and up the imposing Hyner Mountain. The 25K course features three major climbs and descents with 4,000 feet of vertical gain, combining breathtaking ridge-top vistas with technical single-track descents and refreshing stream crossings.

For those seeking greater punishment, the 50K extends the suffering with five major climbs totaling approximately 6,500 feet of vertical gain. Course changes introduced in 2019 added new challenges to this already formidable test, making it a cornerstone event in the Rocksylvania Trail Series.

What sets Hyner apart is its blend of genuine mountain challenge and accessible trail running community. The course demands respect—those climbs are relentless and the technical descents require focus—but the Pennsylvania Trail Dogs organization creates an atmosphere that celebrates effort over speed. The post-race meal has become legendary among participants, providing the perfect recovery fuel after hours of climbing.

Zach Miller famously called the Hyner 25K “one of the ‘funnest’ courses in the world” after setting a course record in 2018, and returning participants echo this sentiment. The combination of punishing climbs, runnable single-track, and panoramic views from Hyner View creates a course that’s simultaneously brutal and beautiful.

The event attracts a mix of local trail devotees and destination racers drawn by the challenge and the Trail Dogs’ reputation for well-organized, athlete-focused events.

The Pennsylvania Triple Crown Series comprises three events: Worlds End 100K, the Hyner 50k, and the Eastern States 100.  It’s pretty simple to be part of this crazy ultra-trial running series. Just finish all three events within the allotted cutoff times in the same year, and you’ve earned the right to be called a Pennsylvania Triple Crown finisher.
