Hellgate 100k 2026
About This Event
Dr. David Horton’s Hellgate 100K stands as one of the most notorious ultras in the Mid-Atlantic, a 66.6-mile winter crucible through Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains that begins at 12:01 a.m. on December 14. The midnight start ensures runners face the majority of the course in darkness, navigating frozen, often snow-covered trails by headlamp through temperatures that can plummet well below freezing.
The course runs from the northern terminus of the Glenwood Horse Trail near Big Hellgate Creek to Camp Bethel near Fincastle, accumulating roughly 13,000 feet of elevation gain across relentlessly technical terrain. Runners traverse steep climbs, treacherous descents, and multiple Blue Ridge Parkway crossings, with the route marked by orange paint blazes and reflective streamers placed strategically for nighttime navigation.
Critical checkpoints include Petites Gap at 8 miles, Overstreet Falls at 21.3 miles, and the make-or-break aid stations at Floyd’s Field (22.5 miles, 6:40 a.m. cutoff) and Bearwallow Gap (42.5 miles, 12:30 p.m. cutoff). Nine aid stations total provide support, with drop bag access at Floyd’s Field and Bearwallow Gap, though crew access is limited to six stations.
The race serves as a Western States qualifier, with sub-17-hour finishers earning lottery entry two years out. With only 150 spots available and strict no-refund policies, the event maintains an exclusive, hardcore atmosphere. Veterans describe Hellgate as equal parts suffer-fest and celebration, where finishing becomes secondary to surviving the mountain’s winter assault. Five-time finishers receive special recognition, cementing the race’s reputation as a badge of ultra endurance honor.
