The Cascade Gravel Grinder is the second race in the Oregon Gravel Grinder Series and it takes place in and around the adventure-loving town of Bend, Oregon. The event, produced by Breakaway Productions is unique in that in the past it includes a single-day event on Sunday, or the chance to participate in an exclusive multi-day stage race that runs from Friday to Sunday. Starting in 2024, however, Team Breakaway is shaking things up to keep the event fresh and exciting for all participants by transitioning from a 3-day stage race to one epic day of racing. This decision allows them to focus on their most popular Three Creeks course. Strambecco considers Cascade Gravel Grinder to be one of the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in Oregon as well as the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in the Northwest.

Event & Course Info

With Team Breakaway’s exciting new changes, including the transition from a 3-day stage race to a single epic day of racing, participants at Cascade Gravel Grinder can expect a fresh and exhilarating experience. This year, the focus is on the legendary Three Creeks course, with three distance options to accommodate riders of all levels. Here’s a detailed look at each course option all starting at Sisters Middle School and finishing at Village Green Park:

Big Gravel
– Distance: 94 Miles
– Elevation Gain: 8600 Feet
– Surface: 90% Gravel, 10% Paved

Medium Gravel
– Distance: 66 Miles
– Elevation Gain: 5900 Feet
– Surface: 85% Gravel, 15% Paved

Small Gravel
– Distance: 44 Miles
– Elevation Gain: 3500 Feet
– Surface: 82% Gravel, 18% Paved

For 2024, the Big Gravel course is bigger and tougher than ever. Riders will face nearly 94 miles and 8600 feet of climbing, with 90% of the route on gravel and some dirt. This year, the course direction is reversed, placing the biggest climb towards the end rather than in the first 20 miles. The infamous “4-Miles of Hell” section is now a climb, adding to the challenge. The course will also include the beloved Heaven section. With the addition of a Pro-Elite category offering cash prizes, competition will be fierce.

The Medium Gravel course has been made more challenging for 2024, with an additional 7 miles and 1600 more feet of elevation. The reversed course direction means riders will start with smooth, fast roads and finish with a big climb followed by a technical descent into Sisters. This route ensures that participants will feel pushed to their limits and leave satisfied with their accomplishment.

The Short Course is slightly adjusted for 2024, adding one more mile while reducing the elevation gain by nearly 500 feet. With 82% of the course on unpaved roads, riders will enjoy beautiful red cinder roads and traditional gravel. The course direction reversal means that the biggest climb will come at the end, making it a fantastic option for those new to gravel riding or triathletes adapting to riding without aero bars.

The Schwalbe G-One Overland tires are recommended for the Cascade Gravel Grinder. These tires offer a perfect balance of speed and grip, suitable for the varied terrain of the course. Available in 700×40/45/50, riders can choose the best fit for their style.

With expanded distances, more challenging sections, and a bigger party atmosphere high in the Cascade Mountains, the Cascade Gravel Grinder is set to be a standout event. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, a commemorative pint glass, a Cascade Gravel Grinder badge, access to well-stocked aid stations, mechanical support, and a Sunday ride celebration lunch and beer. Register now to secure your spot and experience the thrill of these epic courses!
