Gravel Locos Hico 2026
About This Event
Four routes wind through Texas Hill Country from Hico, ranging from a casual 34-mile jaunt to a 157-mile sufferfest with 7,000 feet of climbing that proves Texas isn’t the flat state many imagine. All courses start and finish at Mustang Hill RV Park & Wild Horse Arena, threading primarily gravel roads with grades hitting 20% and featuring multiple water crossings that add technical challenge to the climbing.
The shortest GL30 route offers a non-competitive introduction to gravel racing, highlighted by a mile 17 aid station serving Cuban hot dogs, mojitos, and salsa dancing before the final push through a North Bosque River crossing. The competitive GL60 covers 62 miles with 2,700 feet of climbing, including the notorious Loco Hill at mile 17 where the first official aid station waits.
The GL100 and GL150 routes tackle the area’s “3 Bs” – three significant climbs that define the challenging terrain. The longest GL150 course demands serious preparation, with aid stations strategically placed every 15-40 miles, including the crucial mile 140 stop for final fuel before the finish.
What sets this event apart is its consistent draw of professional cyclists like Peter Stetina, Ted King, and Laurens ten Dam, creating an atmosphere where weekend warriors share the start line with cycling celebrities. The water crossings add a unique Texas twist rarely found in gravel events, while the Cuban-themed aid stations reflect the event’s distinctive personality. Over 1,000 participants typically show up for what’s become a cornerstone event in Texas gravel racing, with proceeds supporting local volunteer fire departments.
