Death Ride – Tour of the California Alps 2026
About This Event
The Death Ride has evolved from a modest gathering of 17 friends in 1978 to a legendary cycling challenge that attracts riders worldwide seeking to test their climbing prowess against the Sierra Nevada mountains. What sets this event apart is its uncompromising focus on elevation gain—over 14,000 feet across 103 miles—making it one of the most demanding single-day climbing challenges in American cycling.
The route covers both sides of three mountain passes: Monitor Pass, Ebbetts Pass, and Pacific Grade. Riders face sustained climbs with grades reaching 12.5%, and the course structure allows participants to choose their level of suffering. Completing all six climbs—both sides of each pass—earns the coveted “All Pass Finisher” status and the right to purchase the exclusive Death Ride Finisher’s Jersey.
Starting at 5:30 am from Turtle Rock Park in Markleeville, riders benefit from full road closures through all climbing sections, creating a rare opportunity to tackle these alpine passes without traffic concerns. The course extends to a turnaround point at Lake Alpine before the return journey to Markleeville.
Support is comprehensive throughout the 13-hour event, with multiple aid stations strategically positioned along the route. However, cutoff times are strictly enforced—segment deadlines determine the latest a rider can begin each climb, and all participants must clear the course by 7:00 pm.
The event’s reputation stems not just from its physical demands but from the stunning high-alpine scenery and the tight-knit community atmosphere that develops among riders tackling one of cycling’s most respected endurance challenges.
