Belgian Waffle Ride California (San Diego)
The Belgian Waffle Ride is considered one of the most unique cycling events in the country with 1500+ participants and stands as one of the largest gravel eventa in America, surpassed in size only by Unbound Gravel (Dirty Kanza) and Barry-Roubaix. Picked as one of our best gravel cycling events in California, it was originally designed 10 years ago as San Diego’s rendition of a Euro-style Spring Classic. BWR is considered one of the hardest mixed surface events in the country and accordingly billed as “The Hell of the North County”. It attracts pros, former pro’s and serious amateurs – all looking for a serious test.
The main “Waffle” route changes every year but typically spans 135 miles and 12,000 feet of elevation gain with over 40 miles off off-road including single-track, fire roads, hiking trails, rock gardens and water crossings. There is also a “Wafer” route which is 75 miles, with many of the same features as the full route and plenty challenging in its own right.
As the name would imply, BWR features Belgian waffles, moules-frites, cheese, bread, Lost Abbey Belgian ales…..and more waffles and Lost Abbey ale! Entry fees range from $200-$250. There is also a VIP dinner for $160 hosted at a Canyon Bikes showroom and includes VIP packet, dinner, drinks, the exclusive course reveal, and co-mingling with pros, sponsors, and other cycling dignitaries.
BWR California is part of a BWR Series with similarly styled events in Utah, Kansas, and North Carolina. The BWR Series is produced by Monuments of Cycling a purveyor of classic one day bicycle races in the United States. They are best known for creating challenging races in the spirit of the great European one-day Spring Classics, all with a Belgique theme. What makes these events so unique is that they are classic, long bicycle races that feature various off-road sectors emulating the pave or cobblestones of Europe; making the varied terrain a challenge for riders’ technical skills, equipment, endurance, luck and versatility.
