Cowichan Crusher Gran Fondo 2026
About This Event
The oldest gran fondo on Vancouver Island takes riders through the stunning natural landscapes of the Cowichan Valley, where gravel roads wind past farms, vineyards, and dense forests. Starting and finishing in Lake Cowichan on the shore of Cowichan Lake, the event features at least 75% gravel roads and trails, offering encounters with bald eagles, black bears, and deer along the way.
Four route options accommodate different skill levels. The Piccolo Fondo covers approximately 25 kilometers for beginners, while the Medio Fondo extends to 55 kilometers with one aid station for those with moderate experience. The Full Fondo challenges intermediate to expert cyclists with roughly 95 kilometers of demanding terrain, technical sections, and challenging climbs and descents. The Full Fondo Plus adds even more distance and difficulty for the most ambitious riders.
The courses showcase the region’s diverse terrain, from rolling hills through rural landscapes to more technical gravel sections that test bike handling skills. The eastern Vancouver Island location provides a backdrop of forests, rivers, lakes, and mountains that make this more than just a cycling challenge.
Gravel bikes work best for the terrain, though cyclocross bikes, mountain bikes, and even road bikes can handle the courses. Lower tire pressures help with comfort and performance on the varied gravel surfaces. Both individual and team categories are available, with teams consisting of two or four riders.
As part of the Triple Crown Gravel Series, the event draws serious gravel enthusiasts who appreciate the combination of challenging terrain and the natural beauty that makes Vancouver Island a premier cycling destination.
