About This Event
This 70-mile gravel cycling event in Boonville, California delivers exactly what it promises: a road bike race for riders who aren’t afraid of hardcore gravel. With 10,507 feet of elevation gain, Fish Rock tests endurance, bike handling skills, and strategic thinking across dramatically varied terrain.
The course begins with a punchy 1.9-mile climb before rolling over rural roads toward the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. Miles 25-28 offer smooth, fast pacelines along the coast—a deceptive reprieve before the real challenge begins. The infamous Fish Rock section from miles 40-55 features a relentless 14-mile gravel ascent with tricky descents that demand respect. The final stretch returns to pavement with moderate climbs and shoulder-less highways that keep you alert until the finish.
Bike choice matters here. The 70% pavement and 14-mile gravel section make both road bikes (700c with 32mm+ tires) and gravel bikes viable, though each offers distinct advantages. Road setups roll faster on pavement but require confident handling on loose descents. Gravel bikes provide better control on technical sections but feel slower on the long paved stretches.
Four strategically placed aid stations provide fuel and hydration, including a crucial water stop atop the first gravel pitch at mile 43.5. The 9 AM mass start creates an intense opening pace, with the fastest finishers rolling in around 1 PM.
Awards celebrate the top five men and women in each age category, with podium finishers receiving commemorative posters. The new “First to the Climb” prime recognizes the opening ascent leaders, though you must finish to claim it.
