Event & Course Information

The Behind the Rocks Ultra offers a variety of race distances, catering to runners of different skill levels and ambitions. The 50-mile route is the ultimate test of endurance, taking runners through some of the most remote and rugged sections of Moab’s desert landscape. This grueling course features significant elevation gains, technical down climbs, and breathtaking views of the iconic red rock formations. The Behind the Rocks Ultra 50 Mile is an extremely challenging and remote race with most elevation gain in the second half. Finishing demands a strong, consistent pace, as the course has long distances between aid stations and limited support or rescue options for DNFs. Cell service is sporadic or absent throughout most of the course. Additionally, there are specific water carry requirements for participants. The 50K route, while shorter, still presents a formidable challenge with its mix of technical trails, rolling terrain, and stunning desert vistas.

For those looking for a slightly less demanding experience, the 30K route provides a perfect blend of manageable distance and the opportunity to experience the beauty and challenge of the Moab trails. Finally, the 10-mile route is ideal for runners new to trail running or those seeking a shorter, yet still rewarding, challenge.

Aid stations are strategically placed along the routes, offering hydration, snacks, and medical support to ensure runners are well-supported throughout their journey.  All routes have a completion cutoff time, with specific cutoffs for each distance to ensure safety and a quality experience. The event caps participants to maintain a high quality of experience, so early registration is recommended.

The Behind the Rocks Ultra also features a festive atmosphere at the finish line, complete with food, music, and camaraderie. There are no specific qualifications to participate, but runners should be prepared for a grueling challenge.
