Every other year, the cycling community turns its attention to Boulder, Colorado, for one of the most exciting and unique races in North America—the Boulder Roubaix. Named in homage to the legendary Paris-Roubaix, this event offers a distinctly American twist on the classic European challenge, featuring a mixed-surface race that draws competitors from across the country and around the world. The event is organized by long-time producer DBC Events. Strambecco rates Boulder Roubaix as one of the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in the Rockies, Best Road Cycling Race Events in the Rocky Mountains, Best Road Cycling Race Events in Colorado, and one of the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in Colorado.
The Boulder Roubaix is not just a race; it's a celebration of cycling culture, held the day before the original Paris-Roubaix and is a Boulder area fan favorite. The event is known for its challenging mix of paved and unpaved roads, embodying the spirit of a true spring classic right in the heart of North Boulder County. With its rolling terrain and variable road conditions, the Boulder Roubaix tests both the skill and endurance of every cyclist daring enough to face its course.
Event & Course Info
The Boulder Roubaix course is a demanding 18.7-mile loop that offers a unique challenge with its combination of 43% paved and 57% unpaved roads. The terrain varies greatly—from smooth asphalt to deeply rutted dirt tracks—making the race conditions highly dependent on the weather. If it rains, participants can expect slippery and muddy sections, especially on the dirt roads, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the race.
Competitors in the Pro Men’s category tackle the course for a grueling five laps, totaling nearly 96 miles, while Pro Women complete three laps, covering approximately 56 miles. Races start early, with beginners and first-timers setting off at 8:00 AM, and other categories following throughout the day.
Due to the rugged nature of the race, neutral support is limited and largely based on volunteer availability. Cyclists are advised to come prepared with their own equipment for repairs, including a pump and spare tube. A thorough check of your bike, including bolts and bottle cages, is recommended before the race to avoid mechanical issues.
For longer races, a feed zone is strategically placed just east of 49th on Oxford Road, allowing supporters to aid their racers without straying far from the start/finish line. It's important to note that parking at the feed zone is restricted to the east side of North 49th Street to minimize congestion and ensure the safety of all participants and supporters.
Whether you're a seasoned pro, an amateur looking to make a mark, or a spectator in love with the sport, the Boulder Roubaix offers something for everyone. With its challenging course, beautiful scenery, and lively post-race activities, it's no wonder this race is marked as a must-do on every gravel cyclist’s calendar.
