The location for the event is Abbeville, SC, a small city located in Abbeville County. With a population of around 5,000 people, it is known for its rich historical heritage and charming small-town atmosphere. Abbeville is often referred to as the “Birthplace and Deathbed of the Confederacy” due to its significant role in the American Civil War. The city boasts numerous well-preserved historic buildings, including antebellum homes, churches, and public buildings. The Abbeville Opera House, built in 1908, is a prominent landmark and serves as a cultural hub, hosting various performances and events throughout the year.

Nearby is Greenwood, South Carolina, a vibrant city located in the western part of the state. Known for its natural beauty and southern charm, Greenwood offers a range of attractions and outdoor activities for visitors and residents alike.  The Uptown Greenwood area features a vibrant downtown district with unique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. The community hosts regular events and festivals that celebrate local culture and heritage.

One of the highlights of Greenwood is Lake Greenwood, a stunning reservoir spanning over 11,000 acres. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy boating, fishing, and water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding. The lake is also surrounded by picturesque parks and picnic areas, providing a perfect setting for relaxation and family outings.

If you enjoy hiking and exploring nature, you can head to the nearby Ninety-Six National Historic Site. This park offers trails that take you through scenic landscapes, including forests, wetlands, and Revolutionary War-era historical sites. It’s a great place to learn about the region’s history while enjoying the great outdoors.

Sports enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities in Greenwood. The city has well-maintained golf courses that cater to players of all skill levels. You can tee off at places like Stoney Point Golf Club or Greenwood Country Club, which offer beautiful fairways and challenging holes.

Producers of the Southeast Gravel Series, the largest gravel series in the Southeast, the six-part series officially started in 2019 but was in development since 2010.  Former pro cyclist Ben Renkema and Boyd Johnson, owner/founder of craft wheel manufacturer Boyd Cycling founded southeast Gravel.  They first became teammates on the same road cycling team. Southeast Gravel has been the work of two former roadies who, over time, grew to love exploration into the unknown and the community aspect of gravel riding and racing.  They ride a lot ourselves and are always finding new routes and adventures. They also lead group rides, run cycling businesses, and live to make people have fun while riding a bike. Southeast Gravel is their way of bringing the joy of riding a bike to as many people as they can.

The largest gravel series in the Southeast, the six-event Southeast Gravel Series runs from March to August throughout South Carolina.  The events are produced by Southeast Gravel and take you to beautiful off-the-beaten-path locales throughout the state.  The events are particularly noteworthy because they often include access to private lands allowing access to secluded terrain not ordinarily accessible.  Each event offers three route options spanning approximately 75 miles, 45 miles, and a beginner/novice option of 15-20 miles.  Some events have significant elevation gains, while even those with less elevation gain are very challenging due to the variability of the terrain.
