Six Gap Century 2024

September 24

start/finish line at six gap century

Set amidst the rolling hills and scenic landscapes of Dahlonega, Georgia, the Six Gap Century stands as one of the most challenging and revered cycling events in the Southeast. Every September, the team at Six Gap invites road cycling enthusiasts to embark on an enthralling ride, testing their mettle across the steep gradients of North Georgia Mountains. It’s not merely a ride, but an odyssey of over 11,200 feet of vertical climbing, covering 104 grueling miles. The editors at Strambecco considers the event to be one of the Best Road Cycling Events in the Southeast. If the Six Gap Century is the behemoth challenge, its siblings, the Three Gap Fifty and the Valley Ride, offer their unique levels of endurance tests. Inspired by the historic Tour de Georgia, this event captures the essence of stamina, perseverance, and the breathtaking beauty of the Georgian landscapes.

What makes the Six Gap Century genuinely distinct is its connection to Georgia’s premier cycling routes. Not only does the event see participation from dedicated cyclists worldwide, but it also offers an unforgettable experience, pushing riders to their limits amidst the serene backdrop of Georgia’s mountainous terrain. The toughest climb, the Hogpen Gap, with its daunting 7% average grade extending for seven miles, and inclines reaching a staggering 15%, ensures that only the fittest and the most determined conquer it. This year marks the Six Gap Century‘s 35th anniversary.

Event & Course Info

The headline route, the Six Gap Century is a titan of a route. The 104-mile journey takes riders up and down six of North Georgia’s steepest climbs, with elevations ranging from 1,400 feet to 3,460 feet. Along the way, riders are treated to fully stocked rest stops, each offering an assortment of food, drinks, and entertainment. Once the taxing journey concludes, riders are greeted with a tantalizing taco bar, now inclusive of vegan options.

For those who find the Six Gap Century a bit too demanding, the Three Gap Fifty serves as a worthy alternative. While it covers half the distance at 58 miles, it still presents a formidable challenge, boasting 6,385 vertical feet of climbing and elevations between 1,400 feet to 3,364 feet. Like its longer counterpart, the Three Gap Fifty also offers fully supplied rest stops and the rewarding taco bar at the finish line.

Designed as an introduction to the infamous Six Gap Century, the 35-mile Valley Ride provides a more relaxed yet captivating experience. Taking cyclists through picturesque locales such as the Yahoola Valley, Turner’s Corner, and R-Ranch in the Mountains, it’s the perfect ride for those who wish to soak in the beauty of Georgia’s mountainsides without the grueling climbs.

Understanding the challenges riders might face, the event ensures full sag support for safety, refreshments at organized rest stops, and technical support from local bike shops at various points. However, participants are advised to carry extra bike supplies as certain parts might not be readily available. The event also places significant emphasis on rider safety. Participants planning to start their ride early in the morning or conclude after dusk are reminded to equip their bikes with front and rear lights, adhering to the bike light law.

Beyond the ride, the Six Gap Century experience is amplified by the Bike Expo held at Lumpkin County High School on Saturday and throughout Sunday, participants can explore the latest in cycling gear, accessories, and innovations. The Six Gap Century  isn’t just a cycling event; it’s a celebration of the spirit of endurance, camaraderie, and the unparalleled beauty of the North Georgia Mountains. Whether you’re an elite cyclist aiming to conquer the Six Gap Century or someone looking to enjoy the scenic Valley Ride, Dahlonega awaits you with an adventure of a lifetime. With a rider limit set at 2,500, it’s an exclusive affair, ensuring a smooth and memorable experience for all. So, gear up and pedal on!
