Updated August 26, 2024 --
The 2025 event date is not confirmed -- Gravel cycling enthusiasts are always on the lookout for the next big challenge, and The Crusher stands out as a premier event in this category. Held annually in Munising, Michigan, this event offers a unique blend of adventure, community, and a true test of endurance. Organized by the 906 Adventure Team, The Crusher promises an experience unlike any other, whether participants are seasoned gravel grinders or new to the scene. It is part of the Triple Crown Endurance Trilogy which also includes the famed Marji Gesick 50/100 mountain bike race.
The event began as the Huron Mountain Crusher in 2014, initially a grassroots event appealing to experienced riders with no frills and no support. Over the years, it has evolved into a significant challenge, drawing cyclists from across the nation. In 2018, the 906 Adventure Team took over, expanding the event's reach and introducing the first point-to-point Crusher in 2019. Despite the challenges of 2020, the event adapted with the Crusher-EX format, a self-supported ride that drew a thousand participants, solidifying a strong, dedicated community. Strambecco rates The Crusher as one of the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in the Midwest and one of the Best Cycling Race Events in Michigan.
Event Course & Info
The Crusher features two distinct formats: the Mass Start (MS) and the Solo Expedition (EX). The MS event is a large community gathering that fosters camaraderie and friendly competition.
One of the most exciting aspects of The Crusher is the ever-changing routes. The course details are typically released in late May to early June, keeping participants on their toes and ensuring no two years are the same. The 175-mile route is the ultimate test for seasoned cyclists, taking them through some of the most remote and challenging sections of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with significant elevation gains. This grueling course features a mix of rugged terrain, rolling hills, and dense forests that push endurance to the limit.
The 100-mile route also offers a rigorous challenge, testing participants' endurance with a mix of rolling hills, dense forests, and stunning vistas. It provides a rewarding experience for those looking to push themselves further. The 40-mile route is ideal for those new to gravel cycling or seeking a shorter challenge, offering a blend of smooth gravel roads and rugged terrain with moderate elevation gains.
The EX format, designed for those who prefer isolation and the freedom to start whenever they wish, offers options ranging from 40 to 225 miles. The EX format routes mirror the MS options but add an extra layer of adventure and challenge. The 225-mile route is designed for the truly adventurous, including night riding, river crossings, and some of the most remote gravel roads in the region. The 100-mile EX route features increased elevation and technical sections, offering a rigorous adventure for experienced cyclists. The 40-mile EX route, similar to the MS event, provides flexibility for participants to start at their convenience, making it perfect for those who want a shorter, yet still challenging, ride.
The Crusher ensures participants are well-prepared for the event. While the event is largely self-supported, participants are provided with detailed maps and route specifics in the event passport, released in June. This passport includes gear recommendations and critical information on what cyclists can expect on the trail. The event caps participants to ensure safety and a quality experience, so early registration is recommended. All routes have a 24-hour completion cutoff time, with specific cutoffs for the EX225 route set at 40 hours. The MS event has a mass start, while EX participants can start anytime within the given window. Finishers receive unique awards, and there’s a festive atmosphere with food, music, and camaraderie at the finish line. There are no specific qualifications to participate, but cyclists should be prepared for a grueling challenge.
It's highly recommended that people who are curious or new to the event consider joining their large and active Facebook community groups, where everyone is welcome to learn about The Crusher and other "enhanced gravel" events, get support, and prepare for these challenges. The groups provide valuable resources and encouragement to help participants find their limits and complete their goals.
