With roots dating back to the mid-’90s, the Tour de Shunk Gravel has evolved from linking local favorite routes to a full-blown race organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Twin Tiers. Originally a road cycling event, it expanded into gravel cycling in recent years with such enthusiastic participation that gravel now has its own registration. The event has donated over $110,000 to charities since its inception, making every mile count for a meaningful cause.

The event offers three gravel courses through the picturesque landscape of northeastern Pennsylvania’s State Game Lands and State Forest. The 74-mile route starts at 9:00 AM and delivers the full challenge, climbing the Schrader Creek dirt road before looping into Loyalsock State Forest after a rest stop at Shunk. Riders face over 6,100 feet of climbing before descending through Gamelands. The 51-mile option starts at 9:30 AM and follows the same path but skips the Loyalsock loop, reducing climbing to 3,800 feet while maintaining the scenic beauty. For newcomers, the 10-mile Intro-to-Gravel ride starts from Shunk at 11:00 AM, providing a perfect introduction to gravel cycling.

All rides feature staged starts between 8-10 AM from Monroeton, Pennsylvania. The mixed-surface, off-road adventure winds through terrain that balances technical challenge with stunning September scenery. Well-placed aid stations provide support throughout, along with mechanical and SAG support when needed.

The post-ride atmosphere centers around the much-anticipated spaghetti dinner where riders recharge and connect. The Fireflies Massage Team helps soothe stressed muscles after the challenging routes. The community spirit that conceived this event decades ago remains strong, with the charitable mission adding purpose to the physical challenge.
